Varna /14th – 18th century/ - Hall 26, 27, 28
hall 26

An 1389 Varna was conquered by the Otoman conquerors.
The town preserved its significance as a port and trade center for the territories to the North of the Stara Planina.
In the hall is exhibited the biggest collection in Bulgaria of china utensils /plates, dishes, jugs and cups/ and tiles imported from the Asia Minor towns of Iznik /15th –17th century/, Kutahia /18th century/ and Canak Kale /end of 18th – early 19th century/. Varna maintained commercial contacts with the Italian republic towns. Imported from there were the curious majolica jugs and plates. Attention should be paid to the big plate with abundant painted decoration. The china bowls and cups were imported from China /17th century/ and Meissen /18th century/.
Halls 27-28
The Mediaeval weapons /swords, spears, axes, maces and harness/ remind for the famous battle between the allied European troops headed by the Polish-Hungarian King Vladislav III Yagelo and Sultan Murad II held in the vicinities of Varna in 1444.
Local earthenware from 14th –18th century demonstrates the Bulgarian potter's techniques /sgraffito and paintings with motley varnishes/ and the continuity of the earlier Mediaeval ceramics. Inherited are the traditional production techniques but the decorative ornamentation is much simpler and schematic.
A special showcase is allotted to the rich museum collection of clay pipes for chibouques /the fashion of the time/.
Another special showcase exhibits various men's and women's decorations /rings, seal rings, earrings and belt buckles/ typical for the epoch. Among the decorations exceptionally attractive is the treasure consisting of women's ornaments from the town of Souvorovo dated from the second half of 18th century.
